Dave Hammond

Performer/Composer

Educated with a performance degree from the Berklee College of Music and a Masters Degree in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Denver, Mr. Hammond has performed professionally in Boston, South America and Denver before becoming one of the founding music instructors at the Denver School of the Arts (DSA). After focusing for many years on his teaching career in Illinois and Colorado, in 2012 Dave Hammond won the Arts Teachers Fellowship Award from the Surdna Foundation which allowed Hammond to travel to Italy and study for 3 weeks at the Veneto Jazz Festival.  There Hammond was able to study composition with Rory Stuart (New School Jazz Faculty, drums with Jeff Hirschfield and Jazz Fusion Music Appreciation with Alan Holzman.  The culminating effort of this trip was to reconnect with composition and performing after many years of putting these important defining activities for Hammond on the back burner as he worked and built a career in Music Education.

After returning from Europe in 2012 the music started being recorded.  Some of the best jazz musicians in the Denver are are used on the recording.  Initially the group included:

  • John Grigsby - Bass
  • Dave Hammond Drums and Composition

Later recording sessions were comprised of the band:

Music Educator

After a 2-year stint as Assistant Director of Bands at Western Illinois University, Mr. Hammond was hired as Director of Bands at Denver School of the Arts.  Hammond has conducted the pit orchestra in many musicals at DSA, most recently In the Heights, The Producers, Oliver, Beauty and the Beast, 42nd Street and The Pajama Game.

Under the direction of Mr. Hammond DSA bands have performed at 14 of the last 17 Colorado Music Educators Association conferences, performed 15 times at the CBA State Concert Band Finals, won many awards and accolades including Downbeat Magazine Student Awards: Best Chamber Group, Best Classical Symphonic Band, Best Studio Orchestra and most recently Best Big Band – Art School Category.  The Denver School of the Arts Jazz Workshop Orchestra is one of the top high school big bands nationwide and was selected in 2017 to perform at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, ILThe band has been a finalist many years in the Swing Central Jazz Festivalin Savannah, GA. Last year (2017) the Jazz Workshop Orchestra took second place at Wynton Marsalis’ Essentially Ellington High School Competition and Festival in New York city, the 3rd appearance of the band at this prestigious event.  In 2018 the DSA Wind Ensemble will perform at the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis in March.  The DSA bands have also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Diego, CA, Santa Fe, NM and in New Orleans, LA.  Hammond is also on the jazz faculty of the Rocky Ridge Music Jazz Camp.

Mr. Hammond stays active as a jazz, band clinician and honor band director as well as jazz composer and drummer.  Hammond is a current member of the NAfME Council on Jazz Education, Colorado Music Educators Association, Colorado Bandmasters Association and serves on the board of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association.  His latest release “Four Canals” is available on iTunes, Spotfy, Pandora and most digital download sites.
